Abstract

A control valve primarily consists of a valve body, an actuator, a valve core (or valve disc), and a regulating mechanism. Its basic operating principle is that, upon receiving signals from an automatic control system, the actuator drives the valve core to move, thereby adjusting the opening size of the valve seat and regulating the flow rate or pressure of the fluid.

Category
By structural type, control valves can be classified into straight-through single-seat control valves, straight-through double-seat control valves, angle-type control valves, three-way control valves, butterfly valves, ball valves, and more. For example, the straight-through single-seat control valve has low leakage and is suitable for applications with stringent leakage requirements; whereas the butterfly valve features a simple structure and compact size, making it ideal for fluid control in large-diameter, high-flow applications.
By actuation method, control valves can be classified into pneumatic control valves, electric control valves, and hydraulic control valves. Pneumatic control valves use compressed air as their power source and feature fast response times. Electric control valves enable remote control and offer high adjustment accuracy. Hydraulic control valves deliver substantial output force and are well-suited for fluid control applications involving high pressure and large diameters.
By application, valves can be categorized into flow control valves, pressure control valves, temperature control valves, safety valves, and others. Flow control valves are primarily used to regulate fluid flow rates; pressure control valves are used to adjust fluid pressure; and safety valves are designed to protect equipment and pipelines by preventing the system pressure from rising too high.
By control signal type, valves can be categorized into analog-signal-controlled valves and digital-signal-controlled valves. Analog-signal-controlled valves receive analog signals such as 4–20 mA or 0–10 V, while digital-signal-controlled valves receive digital signals like Modbus or Profibus. Both types are widely used in systems with a high degree of automation.
Classified by special functions: includes self-powered control valves, smart control valves, low-temperature control valves, high-temperature control valves, and more. Self-powered control valves do not require external power sources and are driven by the medium’s own parameters. Smart control valves integrate microprocessors, sensors, and communication interfaces, enabling intelligent control and monitoring.
