Abstract

In the petrochemical industry, the selection of butterfly valves requires comprehensive consideration of the following key factors to ensure proper matching with operating conditions and to guarantee operational safety.

In the petrochemical industry, the selection of butterfly valves requires comprehensive consideration of the following key factors to ensure proper adaptation to operating conditions and guarantee operational safety:
1. Media characteristic adaptation
Select materials based on the corrosivity and particle content of the medium: For corrosive media (such as acid-alkali solutions and sulfur-containing gases), choose lined materials (PTFE/rubber) or stainless steel; for media containing particles (such as sand-containing crude oil and catalyst particles), select wear-resistant alloy materials (hard metal overlay welding or ceramic coatings).
2. Operating Condition Parameter Matching
Temperature: For high-temperature service conditions (such as flue gases at 300–600℃ or high-temperature reaction products), select high-temperature hard-sealed butterfly valves. The valve body material should be heat-resistant steel, and the sealing surfaces should be made of high-temperature alloys. For normal-temperature service conditions, ordinary soft- or hard-sealed butterfly valves can be used.
Pressure and Flow: For low-pressure differential, high-flow applications (such as circulating water and cooling water), select center-type soft-sealed butterfly valves, which offer low flow resistance and high flow efficiency. For medium- and high-pressure applications, choose eccentric-type (especially triple-eccentric) hard-sealed butterfly valves to ensure reliable sealing performance.
3. Selection of structural form
Low-pressure differential, particle-free cleaning medium: center-type butterfly valve—low cost and high flow capacity.
For medium- and high-pressure applications involving particulates or high-temperature conditions: eccentric butterfly valves (with triple-eccentric design being optimal) reduce wear on the valve seat and disc, enhancing sealing stability.
4. Safety Performance Assurance
Flammable and explosive media (such as crude oil, natural gas, and hydrogen): Select fire-rated butterfly valves equipped with fire-resistant seals and anti-static devices to prevent safety incidents caused by fire or static electricity.
High-pressure / Corrosive-risk service conditions: Prioritize sealing performance by selecting triple-eccentric hard-sealed or lined butterfly valves to prevent medium leakage.
5. Maintenance and Operational Compatibility
For harsh operating conditions involving particulates and highly corrosive media, it is essential to select a structure that is easy to maintain and resistant to wear and corrosion. At the same time, consider the frequency of subsequent maintenance (in such conditions, the frequency of inspections and seal replacements should be increased) to ensure long-term stable operation.
